Isabel Wells Backround by Jena:
The last month of 2009 will be one of the saddest most memorable times of our lives. Through the rat race of Christmas shopping, and family gatherings of the season we began to notice changes in Isabel.
Some days she would be her normal animated, outgoing, and opinionated self. Then other days she would almost seem withdrawn, quiet, and lethargic. With these personality changes came stomach pains, anorexia, fevers, and pains in her lower back and lower sides. It was really a roller coaster with all of this since her symptoms would come and go. We debated on several occasions to take her to the Doctor, but then she would rebound and seem fine the next day or two so we would change our minds and decide it wasn't necessary to drag her through a germ infested waiting room with the flu at its worst.
Finally, on Friday December 20th, the day after her 1st Christmas Party she celebrated, when she showed no interest in her new toys we became very concerned. We called the following Monday and went to see her Pediatrician that very afternoon. Of course Isabel seemed normal or almost so that day, and we wondered, are we just being paranoid?? The doctor examined her, ran a blood test (CBC), and later called with results that very evening.
She reported that Isabel had low hemoglobin and platelet levels, but there were additional tests she wanted to send out to determine what it meant, so we waited.
On Wednesday morning the doctor called and said she needed to meet with Dennis and I in her office, and that she would clear her schedule for us at any time. Now those of us with kids are all well aware MOST news we get is over the phone with instructions and prescriptions to fill. No big deal, just give some medicine for 7 days, and everything will be just fine. So when I heard the words" MEET IN OFFICE and CLEAR MY SCHEDULE", I knew without words it was bad news.
I called Dennis with uncontrollable tears to tell him we needed to go see the doctor, she needed to see us in person without Isabel . The longest 20 min drive of my life was the trip for our consultation that day. In the doctors office, our hearts sank as she explained what the pathologist called to report to her about Isabel's blood work that very morning. He found Blasts she said on her blood smear which was a strong indicator of Leukemia. We knew very little about leukemia at that time. I mean, that kind of thing just doesn't happen to people like us. That's the type of thing you hear about other people getting and having to deal with!
So what do we do now we asked through our tear soaked cheeks? Go home and get Isabel the doctor said, she needs to be hospitalized. The bottom just dropped out from under us at that point. There are no words to describe what we felt that afternoon.
We rushed home, calling moms and dads on the way to share our devastation. At home we walked in as composed as we could be to see Isabel still in her Dora Explorer pj's playing on the couch with her Gram. We packed her bags as quickly as we could and drove back to town and admitted her to St. Johns.
There, after blood tests, x-rays, and so on, the Oncologist confirmed the diagnosis. "Isabel has Leukemia" she said.
The best place for her to be she explained was at St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN., but if we couldn't go there were other options. At that point without words spoken between Dennis and I we said NO Problem, that's where she'll go. There were no other options for us to consider, but the best place for her to be for the help and treatments Isabel needed.
